Racing Grooms play a key role in the development, training and race day performance of racehorses. As well as the enjoyment and excitement of working with racehorses, there are a host of other reasons why being a Racing Groom offers a rewarding and inspiring career choice.
What does a Racing Groom do?
As a Racing Groom, you are an integral part of the team in a racehorse trainers’ yard.
Whilst most of the roles are working with horses as grooms, head grooms, yard or barn managers and work riders, you could also be a horsebox driver or part of the ground staff or office support team. If you work with racehorses you might care and exercise around two to three horses every day.
What qualities do you need to be a Racing Groom?
The tasks of a Racing Groom are varied, and while many skills can be learnt through training and experience, you’ll get better job satisfaction and you will be able to progress up the career path and pay scale if you have the right attributes.
What does a Racing Groom wear?
Safety helmet, goggles, body protector, gloves, waterproofs, layers or thermals, breeches/jodhpurs and boots.
